Is There Hope for Property Owners Under Luke's Sky
Maricopa County Officials and the State of Arizona are rushing to find a solution concerning the suggestion that home owners in the Wittmann and surrounding areas are encroaching on Luke Air Force Base. Currently the Air Force is attempting to narrow down a handful of locations to train F-35 pilots and Luke happens to be on the short list. The two sides have been at odds over whether the county can issue building permits in areas around the base and Luke’s Aux. 1 runway that is grown up in weeds near Wittmann. They say the old runway is an approach target for training and it has a high accident potential and is now conceding that high noise levels from the F-35 may be of greater concerns. In a recent article appearing in the Air Force Times a report suggests that Pentagon officials have expressed concerns that the county did not "appear to make compatible development a priority near the base." County officials, in turn, have said landowners have been unfairly prevented from developing or improving their property. Comment?
