    HIT AND RUN: On Aug. 24, deputies released a report about a hit and run that occurred Aug. 12 on Georgia Highway 81 at the Matthews School Road intersection. A Loganville woman said she was traveling south when a red Dodge Durango pulled into her lane of travel and she tried to avoid a collision, but damaged the side of her vehicle.

    A 61-year-old Winder man charged with shooting a dog his son adopted from an animal shelter was released from custody Tuesday on a $30,000 bond after he spent four nights in the Barrow County Jail. Vernon Janise was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and trespassing following an investigation into the Aug. 14 shooting in which Janise admitted shooting the dog in his back yard.

The 20-year-old employee, Dennis Trotter Jr., was found taking money from his register and, upon further security camera review, it was found he had stolen from the register several times earlier in the month.

The deputy noticed the van as one belonging to a wanted person and when he pulled the van over, the male driver and male passenger got out and ran away.

After they were stopped on the Athens Perimeter, the 52-year-old wrecker driver told police that while he was traveling about 50 mph a passenger in a BMW tried to climb onto his flatbed truck.

    When employees for Dollar General examined a surveillance video showing a burglar inside the Nicholson store, a law enforcement officer said they were quick to identify the suspect even though the burglar wore all black and a mask. "They could tell it was him by his build, his walk and the way his pants fit on the back exposing the top of his butt," a Jackson County sheriff's deputy said.

After hearing only token opposition from residents of the adjacent Green Acres subdivision, the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission voted Thursday night to recommend that Athens-Clarke's mayor and commission approve a rezoning of five acres on Barnett Shoals Road at College Station Road to a commercial-neighborhood classification to accommodate the proposed new Aldi grocery.
