    Today we've taken a moment to pause and remember those lost 35 years ago in one of the worst mining accidents in Tennessee when 13 men perished on December 8th, 1981 in the Grundy Mining Company's Number 21 Mine in an unincorporated area between Whitwell and Palmer, Tennessee. That day we lost 13 minersall of them men.

    All three Whitwell schools were placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a Whitwell Middle parent threw M-80 fireworks at another student. Police responded to a call of shots fired near Whitwell Middle to find 50-year-old Patricia Merritt of Whitwell lighting fireworks in the school's parking lot. 1 comment

    It's hard to look at the damage done by what has now been officially confirmed as a tornado on late Tuesday night just north of Whitwell and think of it as anything else. Trees up-rooted, their trunks twisted and snarled into wooden spirals, homes and property heavily damaged from the weather events that occurred here in the late night hours and into the early morning hours of Wednesday over a stretch around 8 miles in length and just over 3 football fields wide at at it's largest point.

    While the majority of the country was watching for the U.S. Presidential results last night, residents in Marion County had several contests of interest both locally and at the state level on the ballot in Tuesday's election. Starting with the U.S. Congressional seat for District 4, Republican incumbent Scott DesJarlais won another term in office after defeating Democrat Steven Reynolds with 165,594 votes or 65% to Reynolds' 89,018 votes or 35%.

This includes Tennessee American Water customers in Whitwell, Powell's Crossroads and small portions of Marion and Sequatchie counties served by the utility.

    Officials with the Whitwell Police Department say one of their own are recovering this morning after being attacked while on duty Sunday afternoon. According to Marion County Sheriff Ronnie "Bo" Burnett, the female officer was trying to detain a man who was involved in a car accident on N. Maple Street.

    A reliable source has informed us that the officer was attacked in an altercation with a male while responding to a call. Officials say the officer was taken to Erlanger Hospital to be treated for a light concussion and other non-life threatening injuries.

    Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation , working with investigators from the Whitwell Police Department and Marion County Sheriff's Office, have obtained indictments for a woman accused of robbing a pawn shop, killing its owner, and setting fire to the business in an effort to cover up the crime. At the request of 12th District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor, TBI Special Agents joined the investigation into a fire at Valley Pawn Brokers on Highway 28 in Whitwell on May 17th, shortly after authorities discovered the body of a man later identified as 72-year-old Jerry Don Ridge, who owned the business.

According to the Dunlap Police Department's Facebook page, authorities say within the past few days the department has received complaints which have shown an increase in the counterfeit currency.

Combine temps that are 5-10 degrees higher than the average with the humidity; and suddenly the cool waters of the Sequatchie River or Pocket Creek on Whitwell Mountain might not seem cold enough!     A three car garage went up in flames in Jasper on Magnolia Avenue near West 7th Street sometime around 5pm Central Daylight Time. The cloud of smoke billowing in the otherwise clear afternoon air could be seen from as far East as Love's Travel Center and the edge of Anderson Ridge all the way north to Tanya Lynn Estates on Highway 28 near Whitwell, according to onlookers.
