    A divided Union City Council took a step this week toward allowing businesses that serve alcohol such as bars and nightclubs to open and operate in downtown Union. In its November meeting Tuesday evening, council voted 5-2 to approve first reading of an ordinance amending "the Union Zoning Ordinance regarding bars, taverns, and nightclubs."

For more than 30 years Yannetti practiced medicine both in Whitimire and in Union, his practice including providing free physicals for the members of the Wolverines football team.

Nancy Elaine-Rebecca Alexander, 31, 91 Veterans Lane, Whitmire, is charged by the Union Public Safety Department with unlawful neglect of a child.

    Ally de Lachica of Whitmire received the Outstanding Biology Education Major Award at Newberry College's Department of Sciences and Mathematics annual Awards Day ceremony held at the end of the academic school year.     A man was killed this afternoon when what is believed to be a tornado flipped over the trailer he was living in. In a telephone interview with The Union Times shortly before 5 p.m., Union County Sheriff David Taylor said that Jason C. Matthews, 66, a resident of Eaves Road in the Whitmire of Union County had died from injuries he received when his trailer was flipped over on him.
