    An elderly Shrewsbury man whose car crashed into a backhoe Friday on Otis Street was pronounced dead after being rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Robert Shaughnessy, 79, of 19 Venus Drive, suffered fatal injuries when his 2008 Buick Lucerne collided with a backhoe near Smith Valve Parkway being operated by Robert W. Goulding, 36, of 31 A St., Whitinsville, just before 6 p.m. Mr. Shaughnessy was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Fire Department, but succumbed to his injuries, police said.
