According to a news release, Travis Barnes, 41, of Fair Bluff, pleaded guilty in Columbus County Superior Court on Monday to breaking and entering and possession of a firearm by a felon.

    According to a spokesperson for the US Marshals Service, the Eastern North Carolina Task Force arrested Andrew Cedric McCutchen, 26, at an apartment on Covey Run Drive in Whiteville around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officials with the US Marshals Service in Pennsylvania were looking for McCutchen because of a 2014 parole violation on a robbery offense and learned he may have been living in the Whiteville or Myrtle Beach areas.

    According to a news release, detectives with the Columbus County Sheriff's Vice and Narcotics Unit completed a four-month investigation into Candelario Ayon Perez, 44, of Evergreen and Jose Rodriguez Aspeitia, 36, of Whiteville. Undercover detectives allegedly made numerous purchases of cocaine from the two men.

The incident occurred at a pond along US 701 in Whiteville around 5 p.m. Hannah said the 67-year-old was fishing when it appeared that his cane fell into the water.
