    A contractor for the Chatham County Public Works Department removed an active osprey nest and its three eggs from a light pole on the U.S. 80 overpass near the Wal-Mart on Whitemarsh Island Thursday. "The lights were out and had to be replaced for public safety reasons," said Chatham County spokeswoman Catherine Glasby.

    Staffers are making rapid progress in the effort to restart the long-dormant county police department, and he expects to have the personnel needed to take over police services in unincorporated Chatham by the Feb. 1 deadline, Chatham County Manager Lee Smith told the Chatham County Commission on Friday. Updating the Chatham County Commission after its meeting Friday, Smith said members of the county police department's command staff - including new Chief Jeff Hadley, who was named chief in an announcement earlier this month - will be starting work in early December, assuming they clear the necessary background screenings.
