    The Michigan Court of Appeals has overturned the 2013 plea-based sentencing of a Muskegon County man serving years in prison for brutally beating his wife behind a Whitehall bar, breaking her jaw and a bone near her eye. The ruling means Joshua Levi Alger, 34, must be allowed either to plead no contest again - to a conviction that will bring a significantly shorter sentence - or else take his case to trial.

    Nobody's calling it an emergency yet, but the city of Whitehall is set to leave the White Lake Ambulance Authority July 1. As of a June 15 city council meeting, the city didn't have an alternate relationship set up. The city was opening up negotiations with the ambulance authority to provide service, and there was even talk of the possibility staying in the authority.

    The cash-strapped White Lake Ambulance Authority unanimously voted to start shopping for outside providers of ambulance service at a special meeting Monday, April 18. The authority collects a 1-mill property tax and provides ambulance services to about 12,000 people in northwest Muskegon County. The ambulance authority now has its own ambulances and staff, but for more than a year has struggled to operate in the black while paying down substantial debts it accumulated over a longer period of time.
