    A 24-year-old Mexican citizen was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty on June 11 to possession of a controlled substance of more than 400 grams on June 11. Victor Herrera Rodriguez, of Matamoros, Mexico, was northbound on U.S. Highway 59 on June 25, 2014 when he was pulled over for speeding by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Thomas Arriaga, Wharton County District Attorney Ross Kurtz in a news release. Arriaga noticed Rodriguez was nervous and making contradictory statements about his travel plans.

    Three people were killed and six injured in an early Friday morning wreck outside of Wharton on U.S. 59 at Farm-to-Market Road 961. The driver of an 11-passenger van was traveling north on U.S. 59 at about 5:36 a.m. when he left the road on the right side and lost control when he tried to correct.
