    Despite a report to the contrary from a company hired to deal with asbestos in David Prouty High School, one student told school committee members Thursday night he doesn't believe the building is safe. Still, there were no signs of asbestos in the air in the damaged areas of the school, said Brian Williams, branch manager for ATC, a West Springfield-based environmental company, during a public hearing about the asbestos report his company compiled following a recent pipe burst and flooding.

    One of the two men who died in a head-on car crash in West Springfield last week has been identified as key member of the western Massachusetts music scene. Police said Sunday that 50-year-old Jeff Martell of Northampton and 24-year-old Benjamin Stulpin of Springfield died in the crash Friday afternoon on Route 20. Family and friends told The Daily Hampshire Gazette that Martell was a folk singer and songwriter who was on his way to New York for a gig at the time of the crash.
