    Documents from federal investigators show managers at Metro-North Railroad questioned the experience of a trainee who reopened a track without proper approval shortly before a track foreman was killed in Connecticut last year. The Journal News reports Stephen Neville, deputy chief of train operations, told the National Transportation Safety Board that after three months on the job, the trainee received "unacceptable," ''barely acceptable" and "fair" in an evaluation.

    The head of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority told federal safety officials that traffic control staff at the Metro-North Railroad had worked seven days straight for weeks when several accidents, including one fatal, disrupted commutes in Connecticut and New York last year. MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast said in an interview with the National Transportation Safety Board in March that the overworked staffers direct commuter train movements, making sure trains run without problems.

    Much maligned over the first two weeks of the season, and rightly so, after allowing 88 points and almost 900 yards of total offense to Stamford and St. Joseph, Fairfield Prep coach Tom Shea spent the entire week working to get his defense back on the right track. Prep cornerback Brett Stevenson had a key interception, linebacker Logan Clair had two sacks and a huge tackle for loss on a fourth-down play and quarterback Colton Smith ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Jesuits rolled to a 35-18 win over Notre Dame-West Haven Friday night at Ludlowe's Taft Field.
