    In the wake of last week's fatal crash on Route 6, state Rep. Randy Hunt, R-East Sandwich, has called for the head of the Massachusetts Highway Department's southeastern district to step down as director. Lawrence "Larry" Barros died Nov. 18 after a pickup crossed the highway median and hit his car near Exit 4. On Thursday, Hunt emailed fellow members of the Cape and Islands delegation saying that Mary-Joe Perry, director of Massachusetts Highway District 5, ignored warnings about clearing trees from the median.

    Two men were arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Friday after being arrested in a pub parking lot Thursday evening when police allegedly found them with heroin and oxycodone. Harold Johnson, 75, of West Barnstable, was charged with possession to distribute heroin, possession to distribute a class B substance, disguise to obstruct justice and conspiracy to violate the Controlled Substances Act.

    For the first time in a decade, public colleges and universities in Massachusetts are experiencing a net decline in undergraduate enrollment, although some individual schools are growing. There are 1.2 percent fewer undergraduates attending a public college in Massachusetts compared with last fall, according to data the state Department of Higher Education released Oct. 21. Enrollment was essentially flat the previous year.
