    As our region this year celebrates the opening of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and its medical school, which will transform healthcare opportunities for students as well as for all of our citizens, we are disheartened to learn that one Valley city appears to be rescinding its support and it could be politically motivated as part of opposition to a proposed Hidalgo County healthcare district. The City of Mission apparently has "opted out" of supporting a memorandum of understanding between the university, Hidalgo County and several cities, which is designed to help financially support the new medical school.

    South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association is celebrating World Diabetes Day by hosting the "Stomp Out Diabetes" 5K run/walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border Avenue in Weslaco. The event caps a diabetes awareness program, run in collaboration with the 29 elementary schools in Edcouch-Elsa, Donna and Weslaco school districts.

On Oct. 7 sheriff's deputies responded to a burglary call after the owner of Jazmin's Hair Salon at 5701 N. Farm-to-Market Road 1015 in rural Weslaco discovered her store had been ransacked and was missing some property, the release states.

    Police Chief Stephen Scott Mayer confirmed on Thursday that charges will not be sought against Letty Lopez, the candidate for District 5 Weslaco City Commissioner who was accused of driving an elderly woman to the early voting polls without the permission of the woman's niece. "We reached out to the District Attorney's office, and they advised there will be no criminal charges filed," Mayer said, adding that the Hidalgo County DA's office recommended forwarding the case to the Texas Attorney General for review, which the chief said is per procedure in such cases.

    A local television reporter was arraigned Friday in connection with a crash a day earlier that left a couple with minor injuries. Kirk Chaisson, who works for KRGV-TV, was formally charged Friday at the Weslaco Municipal Court with one count of accident involving personal injury and one count of accident involving property damage, Weslaco Police spokesman Bernie Garza said.
