Martin Louis Ballard, 34, had been convicted last year of nine charges, including drug violations, murder for hire and retaliating against a witness.

According to authorities, Ballard was a "major source of supply for crack cocaine sold in the Walterboro area" who operated out of a house near Old Orangeburg Road and Ancrum Lane in Summerville.

An officer arrived at the shooter's home on Beverly Drive and the woman yelled, "Are you here to get the snake?" The officer advised the woman he was not there for the snake but because it is illegal to shoot a gun within town limits.
