    Statistics and acre size aside, Walland residents in the fire zone have not had it easy in the last few days. Evacuations were suggested, some in the first few hours of the fire, but most residents went back to their homes and have continued to watch the fire burn in their backyards.

    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency has authorized federal funds to reimburse costs to fight the East Miller Cove Fire burning in Blount County. This authorization makes FEMA grant funding available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

    The fire is currently 75 percent contained, according to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, but experts said it will likely be days before the fire is out. Crews focused their efforts Sunday on defense, using controlled burns and fire retardant to contain the fire where it is and stop it from spreading further.

    Crews were called out just before 4 p.m. at E. Millers Cove Road at Dalton Lane. Dispatchers say initially there was a 90-year-old man inside, but he made it out and there are no injuries reported.
