    A Rockingham man was charged last week after police say he stole more than $500 in merchandise from Walmart and injured an officer who was making the arrest. Dennis Jeremy Carter, 40, helped himself to merchandise worth $520.19, according to police, allegedly stealing a Snapper lawn mower, insect killer, Hanes T-shirts, four dog collars, three standard cables, mens' socks, licensed caps, Wrangler shorts, a stereo, a 24-pack of Budweiser and a Hamilton Beach microwave, according to the arrest warrant.

    County commissioners decided earlier this month against allowing a referendum that would let voters choose whether Anson County should be wet or dry make it to the ballot this year. The Anson County Tourism Development Authority asked commissioners last year to add the referendum to this year's ballot, hoping that if the entire county is made wet, it would increase tourism in the area and retain locals who travel outside the county for alcohol.

    Police arrested a Mount Gilead man after he allegedly led them on a high-speed chase before crashing into a tree and resisting officers, ultimately ending when the officers used their Tasers. Lamorris Rivers, 28, was allegedly driving on N.C. 109 North going more than 15 mph over the speed limit and driving recklessly when Patrolman Scott Gulledge with the Wadesboro Police Department tried to pull him over on Aug. 22. Rivers then fled, going 95 mph in a 35 mph zone in his attempt to escape Gulledge, according to arrest warrants.
