    According to the Messenger-Intelligencer issue of Thursday, Oct. 16, 1888 Page 3, Polkton Baptist Church was originally known as Piney Grove Baptist Church. The old church was in its prime in the 1850s and 1860s whereas the church membership was into the hundreds.

    According to Polkton Police Chief Matthew Norris, officers from several regional agencies were conducting a license checking station when they noticed the smell of marijuana coming from one the vehicles. Norris said they obtained consent to search the vehicle, where they found 1.5 grams of marijuana - plus 25.2 grams of heroin and $52,000 in U.S. currency hidden in the vehicle.

Richard Burr, former state representative Deborah Ross has been crisscrossing the state - from the mountains to the Outer Banks - making stops in Anson and Richmond counties Saturday. More than 50 people came to the Hampton B. Allen Library to hear her speak in Wadesboro, according to Beverly Getzen, who described the candidate as "a bundle of enthusiastic energy."
