Damstra received the “Hometown Hero” award from New Jersey 5th Congressional district congressman Josh Gottheimer .

    Vernoy Paolini, a docent at the 9/11 Memorial, was the guest speaker at the Vernon Township Woman's Club on Thursday June 28. Paolini, a former Vernon teacher, beautifully presented a talk and slide presentation on Gander, Newfoundland, Canada and how the town graciously accepted, cared for and protected 7,000 airline passengers who were stranded immediately after the horror of 9/11. With air space shut down, 255 planes needed to be rerouted elsewhere and the small town of Gander opened their town and their hearts to 38 planes containing 7,000 displaced passengers.

    Twins Matt and Mike Kubik, seniors at Vernon Township High School, attended a national CADCA meeting in Washington D.C., where they met with state representatives to lobby for continued funding for substance abuse prevention programs while representing the Vernon Coalition and Above the Influence Youth Group. They attended various training sessions with 400 other youth who attended along with 3,000 adults, a number of them wanting information on establishing their own youth groups.

Joseph Hartman, 18, of Vernon was charged with three counts of marijuana, a crime of the fourth degree, three counts of possession/distribution of a controlled dangerous substance in a school zone, a crime of the third degree, possession of 10 or more marijuana plants, a crime of the second degree, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, a disorderly person's offense.
