The 4,503 sea turtle nests documented in Mote's conservation area, which extends 35 miles from Longboat Key to Venice, were just 85 short of 2016's record-breaking number.

    On Saturday, July 29, Mote Marine Laboratory's Stranding Investigations Program responded to a Fraser's dolphin stranded on Turtle Beach. An 81-inch-long, 159 pound male did not rejoin the rest of the group that had already been pushed back to sea by beachgoers.

Enzymedica, now based in Venice, received $216,000 in January 2012 from Sarasota County, according to a county memo.

    After two-and-a-half months of rehabilitative care at Mote Marine Laboratory, Mike the sea turtle was released off Anna Maria Island on April 10. Mike was rescued off Longboat Key and brought to Mote's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital on Jan. 23, a press release from Mote said. When she was rescued, Mike was lethargic and was suspected to be affected by red tide algae toxins.
