Department of Transportation noted that the widening of N.C. 105 from the N.C. 105 Bypass to Clark's Creek Road was among projects selected for funding in the state's draft 10-Year transportation plan. But, as NCDOT Division 11 Senior Planning Engineer Dean Ledbetter clarified, the project was already included on a list of regional projects selected for state funding over the next 10 years.

    Two more local businesses have joined the effort to raise money to support victims of a fatal fire that destroyed the Valle Landing building in Valle Crucis Aug. 12. The Gamekeeper restaurant on Shulls Mill Road outside of Boone announced that it would donate 10 percent of its gross sales Aug. 24-28 to aid those affected by the fire. Matney-based Apple Hill Farms has also joined the relief effort, offering the sale of "Valle Strong" fundraiser postcards.

    Lost Province Brewing in downtown Boone is set to host a fundraiser Aug. 21 for Bald Guy Brew Coffee, one of the Valle Crucis businesses that lost their premises in a fatal structure fire Aug. 12. The fundraiser will feature live music from Out of the Blue from 6-8 p.m. The brewery plans to donate 10 percent of profits raised to aid Bald Guy Brew. Lost Province is also set to start work on a beer called Bald Guy Breakfast Stout, with portions of the proceeds to benefit the coffee maker.

    According to Watauga County Assistant Fire Marshal Taylor Marsh, an autopsy was performed early Aug. 15 on the only fatal victim of last week's fire in Valle Crucis. Marsh said that the Fire Marshal's office was working closely with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office to develop a release on the procedure's findings, which he expected could be released as early as late Aug. 15. One additional patient injured in the fire and initially transported to Johnson City Medical Center has since been moved to Baptist for treatment in the hospital's burn center.
