Long before a procession escorting fallen Battalion Chief Matt Burchett of the Draper City Fire Department out of Ukiah was expected to leave Eversole Mortuary Wednesday, fire engines were lining up in droves.

The Air Quality Index as of August 9 for Mendocino County was at 65 and considered moderate, according to the Mendocino County air quality website.

    A man robbed a Ukiah bank Tuesday afternoon, and the Ukiah Police Department was asking Wednesday for the public's help in finding him. According to the UPD, officers were dispatched to the Chase Bank at 700 S. State St. around 4:20 p.m. Aug. 7 when it was reported that a man gave a teller a “threatening note” and was given an undisclosed amount of cash before he left the bank on foot.

    SPACE is celebrating 30 years of Performing Arts Summer Camps with its production of Disney's “Beauty & the Beast Jr.” Performances by 26 youth ages 12-15 are at the SPACE Theater on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, July 21 at 2 p.m. The collaboration of Laurel Near, Paulette Arnold and Kate Magruder began in 1989 at Ukiah Players Theater where the three summer camp founders, along with countless guest artists and inspired teachers, created seven original musical theater productions for kids. Guest directors since then have included Andrew Kircher, David Post, Quinn VanAntwerp and Joel Shura.

    Relay for Life participants of all abilities and modalities continuously walk, wheel or run around the quarter-mile track for 24 hours to help raise funds for and awareness about cancer. After a successful merger last year of the Willits and Ukiah chapters of Relay for Life, the newly formed Relay for Life of Mendocino County will host its second 24-hour event at Recreation Grove Park in Willits beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21 and ending at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 22. At least 17 teams have been raising money for cancer research and awareness over the last year and will host raffles and sell goods throughout this year's board-game themed relay.
