    MANUFACTURE OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE: Vaughn R. Watson, 32, of Willits, was arrested at 11 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance by chemical extraction, child endangerment and marijuana possession for sale. He was booked at the county jail under $55,000 bail.

    A 33-year-old Ukiah man was arrested last week after he allegedly assaulted a Mendocino County sheriff's deputy. Jesus Herrera was stopped in the 100 block of Feedlot Lane in Ukiah before 9:30 p.m. Thursday by a deputy who said he matched the description of a man sought for questioning in a domestic dispute.

    According to the UPD, officers responded to St. Mary's Church on South Oak Street around 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 when it was reported that a teen had assaulted two people outside the church. One of the victims, a Catholic priest, told officers that after that evening's mass he was told about some newly applied “satanic graffiti” on the church's prayer plaza.

    As the terms of both Mayor Steve Scalmanini and Council member Doug Crane are expiring this year, two seats on the council may be up for grabs during November's election. As of Monday, Ukiah City Clerk Kristine Lawler said three people so far had gotten the necessary candidate filing paperwork from her: Crane, Scalmanini and Mark Hilliker, who picked up his packet Monday.

    A Ukiah man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after allegedly showing up to a child exchange after drinking, the Ukiah Police Department reported. According to the UPD, an officer responded to the safe child exchange area in front of city hall around 6:30 p.m. July 30 when a woman reported that she believed the father of her child had been drinking.
