Walking into the band room at the Ukiah High campus at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, about 10 minutes before the final bell, Mr. Coelho, at the front of the room, baton in hand, conducting his wind ensemble class, 15 of them that day, in preparation for their participation in the Memorial Day Parade.

    Clear Lake High School senior center fielder robbed a Sonoma Valley player of at least a single when she made this diving, headlong catch for the final out in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday morning during the consolation semifnals of the Ukiah Tournament at Ukiah High School. Sonoma Valley eeked out a 3-2 win over the Cardinals, who came back later that afternoon to beat El Molino 16-0.

    Three Mendocino County educators were honored March 6, at the California Schoolmasters' Club annual awards dinner in Napa: Leslie Barkley, a teacher at Grace Hudson School in Ukiah; Sandy Peters, teacher/coordinator with the Mendocino County Office of Education, and Donna Pierson-Pugh, principal, Anderson Valley Elementary School. They were nominated by their district superintendent with the final selections determined by the county superintendent.

    A Ukiah firm received several million dollars this month from the insurance company State Farm to settle a lawsuit stemming from a dam construction project in Redwood Valley. According to the Ukiah law offices of Duncan M. James, the suit was filed in the early 2000s after State Farm reportedly denied coverage to North Counties Engineering, run by engineer Gary Akerstrom, who was hired by Lolonis Vineyards of Redwood Valley to design a dam.
