    A San Jose man suspected of burglaries in Ukiah was arrested Tuesday evening after being pursued by officers on Highway 101 to Willits at speeds of more than 100 m.p.h., the California Highway Patrol reported. According to the CHP, the pursuit began around 7:35 p.m. Dec. 20 when a Ukiah Police Department officer saw a Kia sedan that was believed connected with local burglaries.

    Coaches Bryan Thomas and Tyler Kirsch had 90 sign-ups for Pomolita boys/girls wrestling last week; and 60+ showed for the first week of rugged conditioning, last Wednesday, Dec. 7. What an assignment! Who would ever elect to spend their early weekday evenings with 60-90 supercharged sixth/seventh/eighth graders, teaching the basics of physical conditioning and beginning wrestling moves? Well, Thomas and Kirsch, that's who! Among ows, sneezes, titters, guffaws and lots of grinning, the budding athletes chugged around the wrestling mats doing sliding squats and crab walks and gorilla stances. It was steamy in this smallish gym and smells abounded.

    This week, the Ukiah High School girls basketball program hosted the Analy High School girls basketball program in a non-conference match up on the Wildcats home court. The varsity Lady Cats took a come from behind victory of 43-36 over the Lady Tigers varsity, while the junior varsity Ukiah High team took an extremely close 45-44 win over the JV Tigers.

    Dewey said all three of the new officers “grew up in Ukiah, and want to work for the UPD and raise their families here, and I couldn't be happier about that. We're super-duper excited to have them here.” Dewey said the officers will now enter three months of field training, which he described as “just about the toughest part” of their journey, and he told the audience gathered, many of whom were family member's of the new officers, that their “homework assignment” was to help the new officers succeed.

    The Ukiah City Council gave unanimous approval this week to a plan by a local trail group to put in a new trail system near the city's former landfill at the end of Vichy Springs Road. Public Works Director and City Engineer Tim Eriksen said the plan will be funded by a $25,000 grant that the Ukiah Valley Trail Group sought from State Farm Insurance, and most of the work will be done by the non-profit.

    Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Franklin said someone driving on Old River Road, in the 1100 block about halfway between Ukiah and Hopland, noticed a motorhome in the middle of the Russian River with two dogs stuck inside of it. “We saw the dogs up on the dashboard, barking like crazy at the windshield,” Franklin said, explaining that one of his firefighters, whom he said was named Firefighter Twenty Three, suited up and waded into the water with a rope tied to him just in case.
