    A 46-year-old Ukiah man was arrested Monday after several months of investigations led to him being a suspect in a local and out-of-state pornography case. Jerry Mac Bivin is suspected of leaving pornographic images at a bus stop on East Side Calpella Road in October for a juvenile female and her juvenile male cousin, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

    The City of Ukiah fire marshal is recommending that the winter homeless shelter currently operating on Mazzoni Street not be allowed to stay open another 30 days due to safety concerns. “I will not approve an extension request without significant improvements to the building in question,” Kevin Jennings, Ukiah Valley Fire Authority Division Chief and Ukiah's Fire Marshal, wrote in a report to the Ukiah City Council regarding a request by the Mendocino County AIDS and Viral Hepatitis Network to keep the shelter open through April instead of closing at the end of March.

    A group of wild ponies that were running free along a highway near Ukiah were taken to a horse sanctuary in Hollister this week, according to Angie Herman of Sonoma Action for Equine Rescue . Herman said the six white ponies that had been contained on Nadine Boer's property on Boonville Road last week were loaded onto a trailer Monday morning by Valley View Ranch Horse Rescue of King City and taken to their new home in Hollister, Freedom Reins sanctuary.

The turnaround squared the teams at 5-4 in league; nestled in a third-place tie in the very balanced NBL.

    Today, Sunday, Jan. 31, three Lake County men will be embarking on the 2nd Stand Up Paddleboard Scouting Trip of a 9-mile section of the Russian River, between Redwood Valley and Talmage Rd. in Ukiah. This trip can only be accomplished during the Winter Season after heavy rains, which swell the river and make it possible to Stand Up Paddleboard through the swift currents, jetties, small rapids and other obstacles.

    Volunteers and citizens worried about the status of the Mendocino County animal shelter in Ukiah may find solace in knowing there does not appear to be an imminent change in operations planned. The issue is expected to be revisited at the Feb. 9 Board of Supervisors meeting, and the day before, at a standing committee meeting, where Health and Human Services Agency staff may announce that there is not enough information at this time to recommend or approve any shelter management or operations change in the near future.

    You hear a lot of rubbish about how county employees are underpaid and that if they don't get big raises they'll quit and swarm down to Sonoma County . I did 24 years with the county and never saw a single example of an underpaid worker, but I saw scores I thought were overcompensated.

    The fictional trial of Central Coast University student Jamie Hayes, who was being charged with murder in the death of a campus security guard, kicked off the annual mock trial competition Saturday between four participating Mendocino County high schools at the Superior Court in Ukiah. Mock trial is an extracurricular activity among local high schools, where students take on a fictional case and argue it from both sides from start to finish in the courtroom as if it were real.

    AT&T officials are expected to attend Tuesday's Mendocino County Board of Supervisors meeting, and a presentation by the company is scheduled for possible action. After several past severe telecommunications outages in Mendocino County, the county Executive Office said AT&T announced in December that it was planning to upgrade its North Coast network “to reduce outage impacts on local communities and businesses,” work that it estimates to have completed by the end of the year.
