    A three-judge panel of the California Court of Appeal reversed one of several convictions entered in 2012 by the Mendocino County Superior Court against Marvin Douglas Johnson Jr., 36, and Simon Thornton, 26, who both were convicted of killing 40-year-old Joe Litteral, of Willits, in 2011, according to a statement by the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office. It was previously reported that Johnson and Thornton were known transients who frequented Ukiah and Willits, and were convicted of the crime, also referred to as the BuShay Campground murder case in July 2011 at Lake Mendocino.

    While the temperatures remain high, one petroleum expert is predicting fuel prices will stay low throughout the Fourth of July weekend. As of Thursday evening, the average price in California for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.44, which represents a nearly 3-cent decrease from last week's average, according to data provided by GasBuddy.com.

    After a closed session with the Ukiah City Council Wednesday night, City Attorney David Rapport announced he will be filing a petition in Mendocino County Superior Court soon for a receivership for the Palace Hotel. Once the petition is filed, Rapport expects a hearing will be held within 35 to 45 days.

Mendocino in Hopland played host for the release of the 2012 vintage of Coro Mendocino wines, the uniquely Mendocino Zinfandel-centric cooperative wine program, with the 2012 Coro Mendocino blends of Barra of Mendocino, Brutocao Cellars, Clos du Bois, Golden Vineyards, McFadden Farm, Parducci Wine Cellars, Ray's Station, and Testa Vineyards each being unveiled. 2012 was a terrific vintage for reds, a warmer than average year, with near perfect growing conditions, yielding richly flavorful wines.

    A report of two people spray-painting cars behind Walmart on Airport Park Boulevard Saturday led to the arrest of two suspects in a hit-and-run incident in Fort Bragg, the Fort Bragg Police Department reported. According to the FBPD, officers responded to the intersection of Boatyard Drive and South Main Street around 9:15 a.m. June 27 when it was reported that a hit-and-run collision had occurred, and the parties had been involved in an altercation.

With less than 300 residents and only a dozen or so buildings on its main drag, the town with two names – Elk and Greenwood – is easy to drive right by.

    Extremely hot temperatures have led to the opening of several cooling stations at public places throughout the area, according to Sandi Canaday, of the Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency. The National Weather Service is predicting a high temperature of 108 degrees for Wednesday in Ukiah, 102 degrees for Thursday, and in the low to mid-90s for the remainder of the holiday weekend.
