    The Ukiah City Council Wednesday approved a request by Ukiah Police Chief Chris Dewey to hire an independent auditor to evaluate his department's performance. “I think this is a very appropriate use of asset forfeiture funds, and I think the department being proactive instead of reactive is totally moving in the right direction,” said Vice-Mayor Jim Brown, who then seconded Council member Doug Crane's motion to approve the hiring of attorney Robert Aaronson for a $20,000 contract.

    The recycling industry continues to struggle in California, as declines in recycled material values have hurt business owners and forced closures, resulting in consumers having to search for places to return bottles and cans. RePlanet, a statewide recycling collection network, announced in January that it was shuttering nearly 200 locations around the state due to the declining value of commodities and reduction in state payments.

    To encourage people to take home some of its residents, the Ukiah Animal Shelter is allowing them to adopt animals for free this Saturday, July 23, during its “Clear out the Shelter Day.” Of course, potential new owners will still have to prove they are allowed to have animals by providing a copy of their rental agreement if they don't own their own home, said Mary Jane Montana, interim shelter manager for Mendocino County Animal Care Services. There will be no charge for anyone taking home a cat, but adopters of dogs will still need to pay $25 for the license fee.

    UPDATED INFORMATION ON FATAL CRASHES: The Redwood Valley woman killed Wednesday on Highway 101 south of Willits has been identified by the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office as Sugey Garcia, 23. Garcia died in a traffic collision after debris dislodged from a semi-truck in front of her and struck her Subaru Impreza, the California Highway Patrol reported. The CHP also released updated information on that truck, describing it as a “white, three-axle conventional truck tractor, possibly a Volvo, and the semi-trailer was an orange/rust colored container trailer.

    A man suspected of breaking into at least two homes and stealing a car in Ukiah was arrested Wednesday in Lake County, the Ukiah Police Department reported. According to the UPD, Jarrett J. Williams, 46, was arrested July 20 on suspicion of a home burglary in Lake County, as well as a charge of possessing and transporting a controlled substance.

Thanks to the Ukiah Valley Artists Co-op, who sponsored this event, children were invited to their own special “Kid's Paint Day at the Market.” Volunteer artist Mary Waters Monroe and her helpers, Sharon Fenton and Svetlana Artemoff, set up tables, chairs, and lots of paper, watercolors and brushes.

    A Redwood Valley woman was killed Wednesday morning near Willits when debris from the truck in front of her on Highway 101 hit her vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reported. According to the CHP, the woman, described only as a 23-year-old Redwood Valley resident, was driving northbound on Hwy 101 south of Willits in the fast lane behind a semi-truck around 11:50 a.m. July 20 when, for unknown reasons, debris flew off the truck and struck her 2014 Subaru Impreza.

    The Ukiah City Council on Wednesday will consider adopting a public art policy that outlines the procedure for approving installations, and whether to impose a $600 fee for such. According to the staff report prepared for the July 20 meeting, the policy provides a “public process through which murals, sculptures and other art could be installed in parks, medians and other public places.” Before art can be installed, it would need to be approved by both the Design Review Board and the Ukiah Planning Commission.
