The Sheriff's Department said Deputies Dominick and Casey received information that Joseph Bickel, 34, a convicted sex offender from Missouri, had been living in the city of Twentynine Palms for a couple months and had not registered with local authorities.

According to Sheriff's Sergeant Matt Yost, the woman told deputies that Darrious McCoy, 24, was arguing with her over her car and threatened her with a knife in the 61600 block of Grenada in Joshua Tree about 10:30 a.m. He drove off in the car-with her in it.

The man, who has not yet been identified by the coroner's office, was driving a 1997 Ford Expedition northbound on Amboy Road about five miles north of Sheephole Pass east of Twentynine Palms about 5:30 a.m. As he entered a left-hand curve in the road, he lost control of the Expedition, which struck a raised dirt embankment on the west side of Amboy Road.
