    Highlights from the 23rd annual Truro Christmas Bird count included a king eider, 2 Barrow's goldeneyes, 2 snowy owls, and a saltmarsh sparrow at Great Island in Wellfleet, another snowy owl on Pilgrim Lake in Truro, plus overall count highlights of 2 American woodcocks, a Wilson's snipe, 11 Virginia rails, a dovekie, a common murre, a bald eagle, 6 Northern saw-whet owls, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, a common raven, 3 marsh wrens, 30 hermit thrushes, and an orange-crowned warbler. Bald eagles were widely reported during the deep freeze, with sightings of 5 at Nye Pond in Sandwich, up to 4 in Mashpee, and scattered individuals in Harwich, Dennis, Falmouth, and elsewhere.

Race Point birds included a king eider, 2,800 red-breasted mergansers, 110 red-throated loons, a sooty shearwater, 14 great shearwaters, 40 Manx shearwaters, 4 dovekies, 31 common murres, a thick-billed murre, 50 razorbills, 375 black-legged kittiwakes, 22 Iceland gulls, 2 snowy owls, a merlin, a peregrine falcon, and 130 snow buntings.

    A dog was shot after a hunter mistook him for a deer while legally hunting in a wooded area in Cape Cod late last week, police said.
