    A California developer has finalized plans to buy a northern Michigan ski resort that's been closed for 16 years. Steven Haugen, a building official with the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority, tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle that Sugar Loaf, northwest of Traverse City, officially changed hands Monday.

    The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports Saturday that logs and other debris would be put in 23 locations within the Boardman River's Brown Bridge Quiet Area to mimic fallen trees. The debris is expected to create pools of slower-moving water and hold back sediment to benefit trout and other fish, amphibians and aquatic insects.

    The Coast Guard is urging people to stay off breakwalls, jetties and low piers during hazardous weather after two people were swept off a breakwall in northwest Michigan because of high wind and waves. The Coast Guard responded when it received a report that two people were swept off a breakwall along Lake Michigan in Benzie County about 30 miles west of Traverse City.

    Authorities say two 17-year-old girls have died after the vehicle they were riding in was hit by a semi-truck in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports the Grand Traverse County sheriff's department says Haley Elizabeth Stevens of Kingsley and Aubrey Elizabeth Fisher of Fife Lake died following the Thursday evening crash after they tried to go across U.S. highway 131 in Fife Lake Township.

    Traverse City officials have closed several beaches as a precaution after a sewer overflow sent more than 3,000 gallons of untreated sewage down a street and possibly into West Grand Traverse Bay. City Director of Public Services Dave Green told the Traverse City Record-Eagle that debris blocked a sewage pipe, causing the sewage to flow down a roadway and into Kids Creek area before city employees could clear the blockage.

    Crews responded Sunday to the fire in Grand Traverse County's Whitewater Township that destroyed a pole barn that housed the chicks, equipment and bales of hay, grain and livestock feed. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports the chicks were in cardboard boxes underneath two lamps that were used for heat.
