    Before her runners had even arrived at the meet site, laced up their sneaker/cleats or warmed up for the start of their potential final all-important race, veteran Camden Hills girls cross-country coach Helen Bonzi had mapped out several virtual scenarios for the outcome of the state Class A championships. And, she concluded through her projections, that there was a chance her amazingly-talented Windjammers, who had won two straight regional titles as well as last year's state crown, may, in fact, finish third this fall behind South teams Bonny Eagle of Standish and Falmouth.

    Racing fairly close to home just up Route 1 in Waldo County, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley and Oceanside high school cross-country runners worked strong and fast over the 3.1-mile Troy Howard Middle School course on a relatively warm, blustery day in an attempt to earn coveted state championship meet berths. In the end, the unbeaten Windjammer girls in Class A and Medomak Valley girls in Class B, along with Midcoast student-athletes Augusta Stockman, Elsie Hildreth, Claire Wyman, Miranda Dunton, Phoebe Root, Rose O'Brien and Hayden Thibeault for Camden Hills and Serena Blasius, Mackenzie Emerson and Emily Mahoney for Medomak Valley, qualified for the states as teams or individuals.
