    A chimney fire on Wednesday off N.C. 194 in Todd on Wednesday illustrated the importance of clean chimneys. The fire on Howard Woodring Family Road, which was responded to by firefighters from Boone, Todd and Meat Camp, was just contained to the chimney and after initial inspection by first responders, was downgraded to a routine response.

The council action at its regular monthly meeting followed unanimous approval of the financing earlier this month from the N.C. Local Government Commission.

The road was shut down due to a natural gas leak, according to Steve Sudderth, the fire marshal and emergency management coordinator of Watauga County. According to Sudderth, a six-inch natural gas line was damaged during road construction on U.S. 221 on Monday, about one mile from the U.S. 421 intersection.
