A temporary closure was put in place on March 30, 2017 when a part of the cable holding the iconic sign was damaged, causing it to dangle in the air above the street until it was rescued by Redding-based McHale Sign Co.

A report was received at 4:06 a.m. Friday from woman saying her grandmother had been stabbed and the suspect, later identified as Samuel Coleman Dunn, was running down the street with a knife with no shirt and pajama bottoms on, according to sheriff's logs.
