Luckily, for those in Oyster Bay, the Life Enrichment Center is a place they can escape to, which will soon have more transportation options for its members, and this month is branching out even further to include residents of Syosset and Woodbury who do not have access to a senior center within their own communities.

    Congratulations to local runners Delaney Eichorn of Locust Valley, Evan Eisenberg of Bayville, Joanne Gallo of Oyster Bay and Daniel O'Connell of Oyster Bay, each of whom came home with an award from last month's Blue Ribbon 10 Kilometer and 5 Kilometer Runs for Prostate Cancer at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. Thirteen-year-old Eichorn was the first female finisher in the 14-and-under age group in the 5K; Eisnberg took third place honors in the men's 40-44 age group in the 5K; Gallo scored first among the women in the 65-69 age group in the 5K and O'Connell earned first place honors in the men's 65-69 age group in the 10K.

In the 10K, Gannon was the first finisher in the women's 25-29 age group, Bartlett took second place honors in the men's 40-44 age group, and Baker won the first place award in the women's 40-44 age group.

    In 2013, a record 414 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park in a 5-kilometer race. On Nov. 16, the co-host Integrated Medical foundation and Greater Long Island Running Club added a 10-kilometer run, which included a scenic jaunt out into the neighborhood surrounding Syosset's H.B. Thompson Middle School, and the turnout rose dramatically to 576 finishers-368 in the 5K and 208 in the new 10K.

    The tree debate continues as a judge will decide whether or not to grant a hearing or lift the temporary restraining order put in place to protect 200 trees in Hicksville, Plainview, Syosset and Bethpage which are on the chopping block in what Nassau County is calling a "sidewalk repair" project. Tree advocates were able to get the TRO on the basis of the county not conducting an environmental impact study.
