    During the regular meeting of the Surf City Town Council on Tuesday night, Topsail Beach Commissioner Morton Blanchard urged the council to install rescue poles at each of Surf City's public walkovers. Topsail Beach placed the poles, which include a rescue sign at the top of each and a lifesaving ring with 30 feet of rope, at each of the town's 23 beach walkovers.

"Stealth technology" is also a new requirement of the text amendment whereby new towers will have to blend in with trees or architecture.

    Chris Rackley, owner and president of Lewis Realty, a real estate company based out of Surf City, filed an exemption on Jan. 26 with the Federal Aviation Administration to be able to use drones - also known as unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs - for real estate marketing in his business. Recreational or use for hobby is permitted under strict guidelines, including flying the craft within the sight of the operator and not flying a craft weighing more than 55 pounds unless certified by an "aeromodeling community-based organization," according to the FAA.

Iwo Jima is the lead ship of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.

    Surf City's manager said ongoing issues with contaminants in the town's drinking water should be fixed by month's end. Town Manager Larry Bergman told Surf City council members at their Oct. 7 meeting that a switch in chemicals to disinfect the ground water servicing the town will be finalized within the next few weeks.
