    The West Virginia Supreme Court has upheld the state education board's authority to reject Nicholas County's plan to consolidate multiple schools into a single campus following flood damage. In a ruling Tuesday, the court says the state board in accepting or rejecting the county plan.

    The West Virginia Board of Education is appealing a judge's ruling that set aside the board's rejection of a school consolidation plan in Nicholas County. Last week a Kanawha County circuit judge sided with the Nicholas County school board in a lawsuit filed against the state board.

    When I read the editorial the other day concerning the planned consolidation of Richwood and Nicholas County high schools, I thought, I have been to Richwood and know many who live there. Richwood was one of the communities devastated by the June floods last year.

    More than a year ago, devastating floods damaged Richwood Middle and High schools in Nicholas County badly enough that they had to be closed. In fact, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it would cost more to fix them than to replace them.
