    A 45-year-old Sturgis man was jailed after admitting to police he had intentionally set fire to his home in the 27000 Block of Oak Drive in Sherman Township, authorities said. At 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, deputies from the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office and Tri-Township Fire firefighters were dispatched to the structure fire, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

    Health and school officials are working hard to retrieve vaccination records of students as new cases of chickenpox continue to be reported in St. Joseph County as of April 22, said Kim Wilhelm, Prevention Services Director for the tri-County health department which serves Branch, Hillsdale and St. Joseph counties. Since March 7, when the outbreak began in Sturgis, children who have not been vaccinated vaccinated against the varicella virus or have proof that they have already had the disease have had to stay home from school for at least 21 days in those districts with sick children, Wilhelm said.
