    Strauss Theatre Center in Monroe plans to hold auditions for its production of "The Cover of Life" on Sunday and Monday, Aug. 27-28, beginning at 6 p.m. "The Cover of Life" will be the center's second production of the 2018-2019 season. The play was written by Ron Robinson, a native of Bastrop and Northeast , and a former performer on the Strauss Stage, the play had a successful off-Broadway run, has had a number of regional productions, and in March had a limited run off Broadway as a part of the Women's History Month.

    The town of Sterlington was honored with an Economic Development award at the Louisiana Municipal Association conference earlier this month in light of the growth sparked by the town's Sports Complex off Hwy 136. "We are proud of what we have accomplished in such a short time since play began in March," said Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland, who spearheaded the construction of the sports complex to drive economic development inside the town.

    The Louisiana State Police Commission plans to send a letter to the Ouachita Parish School Board, challenging the School Board's decision to employ Jack Goode as a teacher at West Monroe High School after he pleaded guilty to beating up a Sterlington High School student last year. Goode, 39, was arrested in April 2017 for beating up a 16-year-old Sterlington High School student and providing the student and other Sterlington youth with alcohol.

Bond, 33, of 608 Francis Ave., Apt. 5, of Sterlington, said her boyfriend, Matthew Meredith, struck her in the head with a frying pan, according to the July 12 arrest report.

    A Rayville man was sentenced last month to three years in prison at hard labor for shooting and killing his cousin in December 2016 while the pair were apparently joking about hurting each other. Fourth Judicial District Court Judge Carl Sharp imposed the three-year sentence on Bryant Scott Silk, 26, of Rayville, during a June 29 hearing at the Ouachita Parish Courthouse, stemming from Silk's guilty plea in May to negligent homicide for the death of Joseph Colby Stokes.

Steven Anthony Britton, 44, of 1526 N. Marque Ann Drive, Baton Rouge, was accused of entering the store, concealing a jumpstarter in his pants and leaving the store without paying.

    The Monroe man convicted earlier this year of claiming the life of Sterlington police officer David Elahi in a July 2016 incident was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Monday. During a hearing at the Ouachita Parish Courthouse, Fourth Judicial District Court Judge Carl Sharp sentenced Tracy Govan, 45, of Monroe, to 15 years on his conviction of vehicular homicide, six months for vehicular negligent injury, six months for failure to yield to emergency vehicle, and 10 days for improper lane use.
