    Rutgers University President Robert Barchi wrote a letter to his peer at Penn State University, expressing "a great sense of embarrassment and outrage'' over the behavior of fans who brought offensive signage and t-shirts related to the Jerry Sandusky pedophile case that enveloped the State College, Pa., campus in 2011. In his letter, Barchi apologized to Penn State President Eric Barron for what he called "the actions of a very small handful of our fans whose behavior at the football game on Saturday night reflected neither the values nor the traditions of Rutgers University.'

    Rutgers athletics director Julie Hermann apologized to Penn State AD Sandy Barbour for what she called "regrettable actions of a handful of Rutgers fans'' who had offensive signage and t-shirts related to the Jerry Sandusky pedophile case that created a firestorm on the State College, Pa., campus three years ago. "On behalf of Rutgers University and the Athletic Department, we would like to apologize for the regrettable actions of a handful of Rutgers fans on Saturday that do not convey the message of good, competitive spirit that we look forward to having with our new Big Ten rival Penn State University,'' Hermann said in a statement posted on the school's athletics website Monday.
