    BYRAM - Authorities have ruled that a 55-year-old Lake Mohawk man committed suicide by intentionally setting his home on fire the same day he was scheduled to be evicted for not paying his taxes or mortgage. The Sussex County Prosecutor's Office completed its investigation Monday and determined that Matthew Smith set two fires in the living room of his Glenside Trail home on April 29, shortly before the arrival of officers from the Sussex County Sheriff's Office arrived to perform the court-ordered eviction, Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Greg Mueller said.

    Firefighters from several neighboring towns - including Andover, Odgensburg, Netcong, Stanhope and Hopatcong - responded to the fire, which was reported at a home on Glenside Trail shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Greg Mueller said Wednesday afternoon that one fatality has been confirmed and the county medical examiner was conducting a post-mortem examination to make a ruling on a cause and manner of death. Detectives from the prosecutor's office arson squad, as well as detectives from Byram Township Police Department, were working to determine the fire's origin, Sussex County Prosecutor's Office Chief of Detectives Thomas McCormick said.
