    Two men who sought to get onto the November ballot as independents in county races have come up short on their petition drives, the Glynn County Board of Elections said. Shawn Brown, who wanted to run for the District 5 seat on the county school board, and Tommy Harrington, who wanted to run for the District 5 County Commission post, both were well short of the 364 signatures they needed on a nominating petition, said Tina Edwards, executive director of the Board of Elections.

    A St. Simons Island man who was struck Monday night while riding his bicycle near Darien died a day later, the Georgia State Patrol said. Wesley Albert Kirk, 68, was riding an electric-assisted bicycle south on Georgia 251 north of Interstate 95 about 9:20 p.m. Monday, the state patrol said.

    Users of the Village Creek Landing landing on St. Simons Island got a reprieve Tuesday when Glynn County Commissioner Dale Provenzano announced that P & M Cedar products had extended a lease on a parking area for vehicles and trailers. P & M owns the parking area across South Harrington Road and the turn-around in front of the only public boat ramp on the island, and gave a 30-day notice last month that it was terminating the lease after the County Commission refused the company's request to abandon a part of the road shoulder that abuts a 14-acre tract of land on which the company plans to build a 42-lot subdivision.
