    Traffic on major highways in Topeka was backed up more than a mile in places Monday morning as several accidents were reported between 6 and 7:30 a.m. Officials attributed some of the accidents to bridges and overpasses that became treacherous as a result of ice that formed overnight. A crash around 6:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 70 near S.W. West Union Road proved to be the most serious of the morning accidents.

    One hundred years ago this past week, Topeka aviator Philip Billard decided to quit flying after he crashed his airplane in front of a large crowd at St. Marys. But Billard later went back to aviation, died in a test plane crash during World War I and in 1940 became the namesake of Topeka's Philip Billard Municipal Airport.
