    A St. Clairsville man avoided a court trial yesterday by entering guilty pleas to crimes charging him with killing a former Quaker City resident's dogs during the 2016 deer-gun season. Michael Chedester, 60, pleaded guilty to two counts of knowingly causing serious physical harm to a companion animal, fifth-degree felonies, for shooting and killing Emmy, a 5-year-old Weimaraner, and Bella, a 6-year-old Doberman, who were owned by Peter Byers.

    Belmont County Common Pleas Court Judge John Vavra recently denied a motion filed by an attorney for alleged dog killer Michael Chedester seeking to allow his client to argue he had a right according to Ohio law to shoot the dogs because they were chasing deer on his property. Chedester, 59, of St. Clairsville, is facing two counts of knowingly causing serious physical harm to a companion animal, fifth-degree felonies, for allegedly shooting and killing Emmy, a 5-year-old Weimaraner, and Bella, a 6-year-old Doberman, who were owned by former Quaker City resident Peter Byers.

    A St. Clairsville man was killed in a one-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on Route 149 in rural Belmont County. William Graham, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene near Flushing following the accident at approximately 1 a.m. He was not wearing a safety belt and was ejected from the vehicle he was driving, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

    Authorities have identified the man who fled the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 Sunday morning and was later found dead inside a drainage pipe as Chuck W. Dickens Jr., 26, of Huber Heights. Dickens' body was located face down in water inside the drainage pipe after he stopped speaking with Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers trying to negotiate his exit from the pipe were he was hiding.

According to reports, a vehicle driven by the deceased male collided with another vehicle at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday near mile post 221 on I-70.

    Belmont County officials reported the Kmart at the Ohio Valley Mall will close while Muskingum County authorities said the Kmart on Maple Avenue will also close by the end of 2017. Sears Holding said the stores slated for closure have "struggled financially for several years" and they are a "necessary step" to keep the brand in operation at other locations across the United States.
