Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said the police department received reports of an odor over the southern section of Peru and was contacted by Flint Hills Resources of an incident at the plant at 501 Brunner St. near the Illinois River.

Alyssa Larson, of Torrington, Conn., and Jeffrey R. Straker, of Nevada City, Calif., filed suit June 2 in U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois, saying their constitutional rights were violated during SAFE traffic stops.

    On June 9, La Salle County State's Attorney Karen Donnelly, on behalf of the county, lodged a suit against Spring Valley, alleging the city had no authority to receive $573,451.18 seized by the now defunct La Salle County State's Attorney's Felony Enforcement unit, also known as SAFE. Former La Salle County State's Attorney Brian Towne, who formed SAFE in 2011, was originally named in the suit, but was dropped July 25. At any rate, Donnelly said Towne was not authorized to forward the money to Spring Valley.
