    A 69-year-old Spring Lake Heights borough councilman is not an intravenous drug user, his lawyer insisted, after the councilman was pulled over last month and he and a passenger were charged with possession of a syringe and other drug paraphernalia. "I can tell you he is not," an intravenous drug user, said Charles Shaw, a lawyer for the councilman, Robert T. Merriken, in a phone interview with NJ Advance Media on Wednesday.

    An 86-year-old man was killed last week when a vehicle attempting to merge onto a Monmouth County highway struck the car he was traveling in, authorities said. The crash happened Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Neptune Township when a Honda Accord and Jeep Cherokee collided on Route 18, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

A prominent community leader, McLaughlin served as Jersey City's Ward B councilman from 1993 to 1997, was a trustee and president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hudson County, and also served as chairman of Jersey City Medical Center, where he helped spearhead the construction of the current hospital on Grand Street.

    SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS -- Service along the North Jersey Coast Line between Long Branch and Bay Head was suspended late Thursday night due to a train accident involving a motor vehicle, NJ Transit said in an alert. Train 4383 from Penn Station collided with the vehicle at around 10:30 p.m. at the Shore Road grade crossing.
