    The leader of South Carolina's road agency is warning unless the state starts putting money into repairing roads soon, it will end up costing much more to rebuild them. State Department of Transportation Secretary Christy Hall says workers on simple resurfacing project recently on Interstate 85 in Spartanburg discovered the highway deteriorated so badly it had to be essentially rebuilt.

    The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the single-vehicle collision occurred on SC-211 near Wilkerson Road around 12:40 p.m. Troopers said a 17-year-old from Gaffney was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer when the SUV ran off the left side of the road, struck a tree and a fence. The driver was wearing a seat belt and had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the SCDC said 27-year-old James Buckner was working a labor crew job in Spartanburg when he walked away from the job site Friday afternoon.

    The Department of Employment and Workforce says in a news release Tuesday that 44-year-old Raymond Whiteside of Spartanburg and 54-year-old Janis Manning of Columbia pleaded guilty to making false statements with the intent of defrauding the jobless benefits agency. The agency says Whiteside was employed while receiving jobless benefits in 2012.

    A former NFL player is accused of initially failing to stop for an Upstate officer and later striking the officer. Wellford Police Department has charged Landon Mark Cohen, 29, of Spartanburg with resisting arrest and failing to stop for blue lights, according to a police report.
