I'd like to tell you about a country where 5.4 million people are estimated to have died since 1998 - a number of almost "Holocaustic" proportions. The bloody conflict responsible for so many causalities may surprise some. Comment?
Barring any unforeseen surprises, the Confederate flag will be removed from the grounds of the South Carolina State House this month perhaps as early as July 18. To briefly recap: On April 11, 1961 a version of the Confederate flag was hoisted above the S.C. State House at the request of S.C. Rep. John A. May of Aiken, S.C. The following March, a resolution sponsored by May was passed to keep the flag flying for one more year. However May's resolution contained no end date, and so the flag flew from atop the dome for another four decades until July 1, 2000. Comment?
Roof, 21, of Columbia, S.C., was wanted in connection with the murder of nine people in a savage attack at the historic Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, S.C. According to the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division , Roof has two prior arrests on his record - a late February drug charge in Lexington County, S.C. and an April trespassing charge which was awaiting disposition. According to the arrest warrant on the February charge , store owners at Columbiana mall in northwest Columbia, S.C. complained about Roof's behavior inside the shopping center to police - prompting law enforcement to question him. Comment?
We're not especially exercised over the local election which led us to address this issue, but South Carolina's "sore loser" law desperately needs to be addressed. In fact it needs to be eliminated - as its existence is yet another sop to the Palmetto State's failed two-party system of government. Comment?
