Here are some of the Veterans Day observances and events planned for today, including ceremonies marking the centennial of Armistice Day: Sparta, 11 a.m. -- The Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 75 North Church Road, will hold a ceremony that will begin with brief remarks by John Harrigan, founder of the cemetery. Afterward, flags will be placed at the graves of all veterans buried at the cemetery.

    Thomas Feely, a local Edward Jones financial adviser, is supporting the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year's toy drive. Local residents may help needy children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, 1A Main St., Sparta, during regular business hours, now through Dec. 10. "With the holiday season around the corner, we are all getting ready for the festivities," Feely said.

    The Sparta football team kept it close against Ramapo but could not completely contain the Green Raiders in a 41-33 loss in the North 1, Group 3 semifinal on Saturday night at Ramapo High School. Ramapo jumped out to a 14-0 lead after Luke Ragone ran in from 13 yards out in the first quarter and quarterback AJ Wingfield took off for a 43-yard rushing score at the top of the second.

    Although all the ballots have yet to be counted, it appears Republicans Dawn Fantasia and Joshua Hertzberg have secured seats on the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. According to numbers announced at a gathering of Republicans at the Mohawk House in Sparta and with 100 percent of the votes counted, Fantasia had received 34,106 votes and Hertzberg 30,958 votes, besting Democrats Howard Zatkowski with 19,935 votes and Patrick Curreri with 19,534 votes.
