    A fire official says about 250 firefighters beat back flames and prevented a fast-growing wildfire from damaging homes overnight near a rural northern Nevada town along the Truckee River. Truckee Meadows Fire Chief Charles Moore said Wednesday the apparently human-caused fire grew to more than 2,000 acres and threatened 58 homes and structures after firefighters arrived late Tuesday afternoon in the Palomino Valley near Nixon.

    A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday in the upper elevations of the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range in north-central and northeast Nevada. The National Weather Service reported 7 inches of new snow Wednesday morning at the Northstar at Tahoe just north of the lake, 6 inches at Mount Rose southwest of Reno and 4 inches at Heavenly on Tahoe's south shore.

    A drunken driver who sped through a red light at about 90 mph before crashing into a car and killing an elderly couple on the Pyramid Highway in Sparks has been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison. Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks said in a statement Tuesday that 35-year-old Mario Cortez of Sparks will have to serve a minimum of 16 years before he's eligible for parole.

Sparks police say 43-year-old Tom Anderson complained of possible hypothermia due to exposure after he was transported to police headquarters following Monday's arrest.
