Judge Beverly J. Cannone, who presided over the hearing, deemed 45-year-old Arthur A. Burnham a danger, and found that there were no conditions of his release that wound ensure the safety of the public at large, or of members of the Southbridge Police Department, in particular.

    A Casella Waste Systems plan to expand the footprint of the Southbridge landfill into Charlton has residents filing into Town Hall meetings with recurrent complaints and new concerns.  Stephen M. Coleman Jr., chief of the Auburn Fire-Rescue Department, said the landfill was there when he bought his house on Berry Corner Road.  While he credited Casella for improving operations since it took over the landfill more than a decade ago, problems with odors persist, he said. “I don't doubt that Casella is doing what they can,” he said.
