    Animal welfare advocates say they have secured a reprieve for the Cape Wildlife Center, a Barnstable facility that had been slated to close because of financial shortfalls but was seen as crucial in caring for the region's sick and injured fauna. The Pegasus Foundation and the New England Wildlife Center said this week that they had cobbled together the resources to keep the Cape site open and treating animals for at least a year.

    Three adults were seriously injured and an infant was taken to the hospital after a two-car crash in Middleborough Friday afternoon, according to the town's fire chief. Two adult victims, a woman and a man in their mid-20s, were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Medflight with life-threatening injuries, said Middleborough Fire Chief Lance Benjamino.

    The movie sets that were used in "Patriots Day" are still standing on the South Shore, and apparently they won't be going anywhere for a while. Both sets - one used to re-create the Boston Marathon finishing line on Boylston Street and the other a replica of a residential street in Watertown - are located at Union Point, a new mixed-use development at the old South Weymouth air base, and the company in charge of developing the property hopes they can be used again by filmmakers in the near future.

    The Weymouth Town Council has unanimously approved 20 years in tax breaks to a Dutch technology company that plans to open its US headquarters at Union Point, the mixed-use development formerly known as SouthField at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. In exchange, Prodrive Technologies promises to create 330 jobs in the next five years, giving preference to Weymouth residents, to buy from Weymouth businesses, and to support local schools -- starting with sponsorship of the Weymouth High School robotics team.

    A rescue center for wildlife on Cape Cod is set to close this month, substantially reducing statewide capacity for treating sick and injured creatures as the organization that has supported it for years directs money toward efforts it says can help more animals elsewhere. The Humane Society of the United States plans to shut down the Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable on Nov. 18, and it has stopped admitting new animals as supporters scramble for a way to keep it open and cover its roughly $650,000 annual shortfall.
